The Kirby Gallery in Roxboro is featuring the art works of Alyssa Hinton in March with “The Awakening Series: A Southeastern Odyssey.”
Hinton, a resident of Durham, is internationally trained and creates art that has a universal appeal.
Hinton uses vibrant colors that awaken the soul and illustrate a theme of cultural transformation through her unique southeastern Native American imagery.
Within her work, she is investigating on many levels and challenging conventional parameters of “expected” Indian imagery.
Her themes reflect an attempt to untangle a complicate web of events pertaining to the displacement of her Tuscarora/ Osage ancestors.
The narrative earth conscious works in “The Awakening Series” speak to the preservation of indigenous traditions, bringing to light aspects of a distinct but under represented southeastern Native experience, one whose basic world view is rooted in ancient Mississippian mound culture.
On Friday, March 7, the ‘Meet the Artist’ event will be held for the show from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Kirby Cultural Arts Complex at 213 N Main Street.
During this event, Hinton will give a talk about her work.
This is also a special event in which the public is invited to come to the gallery for snacks and conversation with the artist about her work.
Each month the Kirby Gallery welcomes artists to display their work for the public’s enjoyment and education.
The Arts Council of Person County, Person County Recreation, Arts and Parks and Piedmont Community College sponsor the Kirby Gallery.
“Please join us to celebrate this amazing work,” invites Director Erin Ganey Hill.
The Kirby Cultural Arts Complex is located at 213 North Main St., Roxboro, NC 27573.
Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 1 to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
