Using vibrant colors that awaken the soul, mixed media artist, Alyssa Hinton, illustrates a theme of cultural regeneration<\/strong> through her unique southeastern Native American imagery. Her work is a provocative portrayal of the folklore and history surrounding her roots, utilizing tradition<\/strong> and vision<\/strong> with a contemporary<\/strong> edge.<\/p>\n Internationally trained<\/strong>, and of mixed heritage, Alyssa draws on a\u00a0rather\u00a0eclectic background. This has allowed her to\u00a0create art with universal appeal, investigating on many levels and challenging conventional parameters of “expected” Indian imagery.\u00a0Her recent themes reflect an attempt to untangle a complicated web of events pertaining to the displacement of her Tuscarora (Eastern North Carolina) and Osage (Missouri\/Kansas) ancestors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Alyssa’s\u00a0narrative earth conscious works<\/strong> speak to the preservation of both the ecology and indigenous spiritual traditions.\u00a0<\/strong>They\u00a0<\/strong>bring to light aspects of a distinct but under represented southeastern Native experience, one whose basic world view is rooted in ancient Mississippian mound culture<\/strong>. On a more personal note, by uncovering what has been denied or seemingly lost, the work also chronicles the artist’s “inner restoration\u201d.<\/p>\n Alyssa has exhibited\u00a0her\u00a0mixed media art throughout the country and abroad<\/strong>. Alyssa earned her B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art<\/strong> and her M.A. in Art & Design from North Carolina State University<\/strong>. She has studied overseas\u00a0at the University of Grenoble, Parson\u2019s in Paris, Beijing University<\/strong>, and the China Central Academy of Fine Arts<\/strong> in Beijing.\u00a0She was born in Philadelphia in 1962 and now lives in Durham, North Carolina.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
