Her work is a provocative portrayal of the folklore and history surrounding her roots, utilizing <strong>tradition<\/strong> and <strong>vision<\/strong> with a <strong>contemporary<\/strong> edge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Internationally trained<\/strong>, and of mixed heritage, Alyssa draws on a\u00a0rather\u00a0eclectic background. This has allowed her to\u00a0create art with universal appeal, investigating on many levels and challenging conventional parameters of &#8220;expected&#8221; Indian imagery.\u00a0Her recent themes reflect an attempt to untangle a complicated web of events pertaining to the displacement of her <strong>Tuscarora (Eastern North Carolina) and Osage (Missouri\/Kansas) ancestors<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Alyssa&#8217;s\u00a0narrative <strong>earth conscious works<\/strong> speak to the preservation of both the ecology and <strong>indigenous spiritual traditions.\u00a0<\/strong>They<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>bring to light aspects of a distinct but under represented southeastern Native experience, one whose basic world view is rooted in ancient <strong>Mississippian mound culture<\/strong>. On a more personal note, by uncovering what has been denied or seemingly lost, the work also chronicles the artist&#8217;s &#8220;inner restoration\u201d.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h3>Venues:<\/h3>\n<p>Alyssa has exhibited\u00a0her\u00a0mixed media art throughout the country and <strong>abroad<\/strong>. She is the recipient of numerous awards including\u00a0the highly coveted <strong>Mid-Atlantic\/NEA Regional Painting Fellowship<\/strong>.\u00a0She has appeared on <strong>NBC TV<\/strong> and been featured in various publications, including Native Peoples Magazine and Random House\u2019s Official Price Guide to Native American Art.<\/p>\n<p>Selected venues include Artrain USA\u2019s \u201cNative Views; Influences of Modern Culture\u201d, the <strong>Smithsonian NMAI<\/strong> Inaugural First Americans Art Market in Washington, D.C., the \u201cHonor the Earth; Impacted Nations\u201d exhibition tour, \u201cRelations: Indigenous Dialogue\u201d at the <strong>IAIA in Santa Fe<\/strong>, the FedEx Global Education Center, <strong>University of North Carolina<\/strong> at Chapel Hill, NC,\u00a0<strong>The Museum of the Southeast American Indian\u00a0<\/strong>and the\u00a03rd\u00a0Biennial Contemporary American Indian Arts Series,\u00a0<strong>A.D. Gallery,\u00a0<\/strong>The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, <strong>Duhesa Gallery<\/strong>, University of Colorado at Fort Collins, <strong>Frederic Jameson Gallery<\/strong>, Duke University, Durham, NC, the <strong>George Boole Library<\/strong>, University\u00a0College\u00a0Cork, Ireland and\u00a0<strong>China Academy of Art<\/strong>, Hangzhou China.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">\n<h3>Education:<\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"text-align: left;\">Alyssa earned her <strong>B.F.A. from Tyler School of Art<\/strong> and her <strong>M.A. in Art &amp; Design from North Carolina State University<\/strong>.
