Two new\u00a0pieces of mine, \u201cOne Buck 2\u201d and “Ghost Dance” will be included in the TRUTH TO POWER 2 at\u00a0Pleiades Gallery<\/strong>\u00a0in Durham, NC. This year it\u00a0was juried by Kenneth G. Rogers of NCCU. The opening reception is from 6-9 pm, Friday, July\u00a018, 2014.

TRUTH TO POWER 2 at\u00a0Pleiades Gallery-\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/span>t<\/span>his\u00a0community art<\/span>\u00a0show focuses on matters of social justice. I decided to enter the following pieces because\u00a0I wanted to \u00a0use “earth spirituality” to\u00a0make political statements<\/span>…basically showing how it can be subdued\u00a0by our national corporate commercial focus:<\/p>\n

On the left-Title of Work: “One Buck 2”<\/h3>\n

Medium: mixed media composite pigment print<\/p>\n

Price: $550<\/p>\n

Statement: The title of this piece alludes to the original slang term \u201cbuck\u201d (one dollar bill), meaning one deerskin during the days of the deer skin trade. This is an environmental statement, with the deer being shown as a magical, mystical creature. The earth-animal-cosmos connection is being masked or cloaked by abstract stars and stripes (flag imagery). Venus, the morning star, is also known as the deer star, the deer signifying a new day. I am using this symbology to represent looking forward to an environmentally conscious civilization.<\/p>\n

Medium: pigment print of\u00a0digital photo\u00a0composite\u00a0using figures (myself),\u00a0green screen\u00a0and peeling green wall off of Main Street in Durham<\/p>\n

Price: $330<\/p>\n

Statement: Historically, the Ghost Dance of 1890 was a new religious movement incorporated into numerous Native American\u00a0belief systems. According to the prophet Wovoka’s teachings, proper practice of the dance would reunite the living with the\u00a0spirits of the dead and bring peace, prosperity, and unity to native peoples throughout the region. The basis for the Ghost\u00a0Dance (circle dance) is a traditional ritual, which has been used by many Native Americans since prehistoric times.\u00a0In this photo I have placed myself doing a singular inner city ghost dance right off of Main Street Durham (part of this wall now has a\u00a0fish mural painted on it) to signify the desire to connect with the spirit world in this day and age. In our modern daily grind and\u00a0“business as usual” the predominant paradigm seems to run rough shod over the spirit side of life, numbing the mind and\u00a0“steam rolling” the soul. As Einstein himself said (which has been kept under wraps for years) \u201cEveryone who is seriously\u00a0involved in the pursuit of science becomes convinced that a spirit is manifest in the laws of the universe \u2013 a spirit vastly superior\u00a0to that of man.\u201d<\/p>\n
