Completion of the Deer Panther Spaceship Sculptures.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I am happy to announce the completion of the Deer Panther Spaceship\u00a0Sculptures!\u00a0<\/strong>This iconic duo\u00a0is part of my\u00a0“Ancestral Spaceship” series of mixed media assemblage sculptures<\/a><\/strong>. I’ve imbued these pieces with\u00a0deep concepts and they have been a very long time in the making.<\/p>\n

Opposites attract for this pair in their innocence and fierceness…the hunted and the hunter…passive prey and aggressive predator!<\/p><\/div>\n

Life & death, the ultimate duality!\u00a0<\/strong>Can you have one without the other?\u00a0That is the hidden subject for this\u00a0Deer Panther pairing…balance through complementary opposites!
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Spring and Fall:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I created this pairing to align with\u00a0Spring and Fall, which, being on opposite sides of the medicine wheel, are\u00a0symbolic of life & death.<\/p>\n

Spring (“Deer Time”) is\u00a0the season for the emergence of new life, hence,\u00a0I gave my deer the\u00a0bright & shiny innocent eyes of a child!\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fall (“Panther Time”) is\u00a0the season of\u00a0death and the spirit realm. This is why I put the Milky Way in the open mouth<\/strong> of the Panther (Jaguar). It’s\u00a0symbolic of the soul’s journey, and of our transformation as our consciousness moves from one reality to another (more on that below).<\/p>\n

Deer Thoughts:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

I built the Deer\u00a0“Spaceship”\u00a0with Venus, the Morning Star in mind (also known as the “Deer Star”).<\/strong>\u00a0In addition to using sunrise colors, I gave this piece a double morning star for eyes. I have frequently included deer in my art since 1996, when\u00a0I connected to my Tuscarora heritage\u00a0and\u00a0began to illustrate stories I was told about the deer clan. At that point I started exploring deer imagery in my photo collages. Later on, I did some 2-D deer\u00a0composites<\/a><\/strong>, inspired by an encounter with a picture of the Caddoan “Deer Man” mask, found in a mound in Louisiana…see below:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Panther (Jaguar)<\/strong> Thoughts:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The<\/strong>\u00a0Panther (Jaguar) “Spaceship” is my rendition of the mythological water being known as the the “Underwater Panther”,\u00a0<\/strong>a\u00a0direct ancestral icon from\u00a0the mound cultures of North America.\u00a0<\/strong>The “Underwater Panther”\u00a0possesses great supernatural power, including extremely keen vision. In the\u00a0Panther (Jaguar) “Spaceship” sculpture I show this hunter peering\u00a0through water reeds as he\/she surfaces from the depths. Notice the large bright green eyes I have given it!<\/p>\n

The Red & The White:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The ceramic Underwater Panther above shows the tell-tale red and white swirl. Historically in the southeast, the fundamental color duo of red and white<\/a><\/strong><\/span> was used to express dualities of many kinds. A red and white combination could encompass\u00a0good\u00a0vs.\u00a0bad, pure vs. impure, order vs. disorder, chaos vs.harmony, war vs. peace, light vs.dark and the on-going struggle between the celestial and subterranean realms, to which the Underwater Panther belongs.\u00a0Mississippian artists depicted this concept\u00a0frequently in many forms and media. I painted the backs of the\u00a0Deer Panther Spaceship Sculptures red and white like the other\u00a0sculptures in this series<\/a><\/strong>!<\/p>\n

The Panther (Jaguar) is an prominent\u00a0icon from ancient Mississippian culture (part of\u00a0the “Southeastern Ceremonial Complex” or “Cult of the Dead”). When I started to research this belief system, I realized how widely shared across Indian nations the Panther (Jaguar) is. \u00a0Spanning from South to North America, the Panther\u00a0(Jaguar) represents the connection to the ancestors who reside in the spirit world (underworld).<\/p>\n

But the Panther (Jaguar) carries an even deeper symbology because it guards the “gates” to that underworld, a metaphysical world (\u201cXibalba\u201d in Mayan) of a different dimension or realm.\u00a0The entrance to\u00a0the road to Xibalba is traditionally shown as the mouth of a cave\u00a0or as\u00a0the\u00a0dark rift<\/a>\u00a0which is a visible part of the\u00a0Milky Way. Again, that’s why I put the\u00a0Milky Way in the open mouth\u00a0of the Panther (Jaguar), with the teeth having a stalactite and stalagmite\u00a0appearance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
