AN ARTIST’S “THIS OLD HOUSE”
Studio Renovation Update
Things have progressed on my soon-to-be heavenly space which has become like a grand episode of an artist’s “This Old House”:
I don’t know about you, but I’m definitely a fan of shows like “This Old House” and You Tube channels like “Living Big In A Tiny House.” You can learn all kinds of tricks of the trade for home repair and clever innovations for maximizing space…and I have yet to watch HGTV, the home improvement and real estate reality show.
If you’ve ever indulged in shows like these you may enjoy the triumph of a good re-model story. In my case, it’s the story of an old (slightly dilapidated) space being re-purposed and reborn…So welcome back to the revolving door of renovations at my studio, where things are moving progressively from gray to white!
An Artist’s “This Old House”-Winter Creative Den
Before and After!
Keeping some of the original brick wall reminds me of some of the cool places at the American Tobacco Campus in Durham, where the old warehouses have been re-purposed for retail:
Tarnished bricks add texture and atmosphere!…the only problem is it took me several days to thoroughly scrub them down, especially to remove the black soot you see above the chimney! I used a mixture of salt and dishwashing liquid which I slathered onto a special barbeque grill scrubber.
An Artist’s “This Old House”-Stairwell Storage
Before and After!
One man’s scrap two by four is another man’s treasure:
This multi-colored scrap two by four wall will enclose the storage area under the basement stairs. I’m keeping all my scrap wood and painting stretcher frames under here. I intentionally mixed up the various natural tones of the wood by cutting them to different lengths and staggering them…this is going to look cool when it’s done!
An Artist’s “This Old House”-Walls & Trim
We used non-VOC primer to paint the drywall before cutting and installing the window and door trim:
…Thanks for allowing me to share more pictures of the “major surgery” I’ve been up to, which, at times, seems like a never ending project!
That’s all for now…but I’ll keep you posted on my progress.
P.S. The holidays are coming. I don’t discount often, but when I do, it’s around the holidays (starting with Thanksgiving & Black Friday)!
…So stay tuned for major discounts on a variety of fine art prints!
