I’m excited to announce that I’m included in a year-long Exhibition at West Virginia University titled Appalachian Futures!
Appalachian Futures is put on by West Virginia University Libraries. It’s a new exhibition that addresses the current dominant narratives about Appalachia in a new way (including indigenous Appalachia), by looking at how the people of Appalachia have worked and will work to rewrite their own story.
As seen above, my photo-collage The Unbeaten Path-Caretaker is included. It’s inspired by questions and experiences relating to my woodland heritage, and reflects my connection to the land and locations of my indigenous ancestors. The Unbeaten Path-Caretaker is part of the “Spiritual Ground” series of mixed media photo collage originals and prints (1996 – 2000).
A caretaker looks after the knowledge and ways of old. The unbeaten path is the road less traveled, often a solitary road for the necessary duration. On the path is a spirit presence marked by the hand symbol of eternity. The hand-holding figures around the border create a fragmented circle. These figures are from the famous wampum belt given to the Iroquois confederacy by George Washington in the 1790s to negotiate a peace treaty.
Appalachian Futures opened Sept. 3 and will run for an entire year traveling to six different university libraries in West Virginia !
