This video offers an inside look at what’s been going on in my studio lately…the resolution of the tobacco barn in my original “Mum’s the Word” collage.

Digital Hybrid Rendition Shown in the Video:
The “Mum’s The Word-Plantation Memory” collage is about the little known fact (historical secret) of Indian slavery on southern plantations.
This is the digital hybrid rendition shown in the video. I’m happy with this piece, but I always felt the statement would be stronger by switching out the barns with North Carolina style tobacco barns.
“Mum’s The Word-Plantation Memory”
Medium: photographic cutouts with occasional found imagery or drawing added, digital editing
Print Format: variable media
Dimensions: multiple sizes
The whole idea is based on my experience searching Johnston County (NC) for the tobacco plantation where my Indian ancestors were slaves. After spending some time on the land and conversing with long lost relatives, I felt a clear connection to the past. As we were leaving in the van I sensed the presence of my ancestors, hearing their voices from across the tobacco field. This was the original inspiration and impetus for the piece.

As Of Today:
This is what the original collage looks like now, even though the pieces still need to be glued down. I added some colored pencil to the barns to match the silent lips and red X above.
